First Lutheran Church of Venice
First Lutheran Responds
Following the terror attacks on September 11, First Lutheran held special prayer services
on evening of Wednesday, Sept. 12, and at noon on Friday, Sept. 14, and reflected on the tragic events during
the regular Sunday service on Sept. 16.
Now might be a good time to actively respond in
one or several ways. For that, we would like your opinion. The following are examples
of what we might do as a congregation. What actions do you support, where would you
participate?
- Give an entire Sunday offering to the relief effort or to a church in New York that
ministers to the victims.
- Establish a resource center where people can share insightful articles,
websites, quotes, their own reflections, and other such items.
- Pray for the families of the victims by name at special services or prayer vigils.
- Develop a relationship with a church in Manhattan for purposes of supporting them in
prayer and other ways.
- Make the addresses and phone numbers of our elected government officials
regularly available to members throughout this crisis.
- Continue to lift up our country and its future in Sunday sermons, prayers, and hymns.
- Sponsor forums, informal gatherings, or guest speakers for members to share their
views or learn more about our national and world situation.
- Reach out to the community - or our individual neighborhoods - with messages
or symbols of home and care.
- Conduct special classes on themes such as "What Does the Bible Say About": war,
turning the other cheek, etc.
- Host a blood bank on a regular basis at our facility or direct members to one
nearby.
- Develop an ongoing relationship with a local Muslim congregation.
- Care more for each other during this crisis by means of telephone trees,
caring circles, or increased visiting by staff and leaders.
- Write letters to people in the military.
- Contribute regularly to relief organizations (such as
Heifer Project,
LWR)
that will help the innocent overseas victims of this crisis.
